Douglas’ Keltan Ewing and KW’s Cameron Burkett shine at the Kelly Walsh Invitational
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The sun was shining, and the weather was beautiful in Casper Thursday morning and afternoon for the Kelly Walsh Invitational. The Trojans hosted Douglas, Wheatland and others for an outdoor track meet.
Douglas’ Keltan Ewing did not pass up an opportunity to dazzle in the Oil City. The Bearcat senior took home the top spot in four events including the boys’ pole vault, 300m hurdles, 100m dash and running a leg on the sprint medley relay.
Wheatland’s Lily Nichols also put on a show Thursday afternoon. In the final moments of the girls’ 800 m, Nichols won by a nose to take the spot, and she also won the long jump.
While some visitors had great days, it was also a chance to defend home turf for some of Kelly Walsh’s best track and field athletes. Cameron Burkett won the boys’ shot put and discus.
Burkett’s goal entering this season has been to eclipse the state shot put record of 63-8.5, and he’s been making progress towards that goal. He said he still needs to work harder in practice to get there.
“Focus more on my technique,” said Burkett on where it starts to improve. “I’ve been getting a lot of reps in, but not a lot of technique work, so get a lot more technique work and start hucking the thing a little further.”
Makena Clemens made it a spectacular day for Kelly Walsh throwers. She won both the girls’ discus and shot put.
