CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - We started off the day with mostly clear skies and record breaking temperatures on the southeastern side of the state today due to some strong winds still coming in from the south. Although, conditions are going to worsen as the rain and snow come in during the overnight hours due the strong instability from the warm air and frontal system. We saw a number of showers throughout the day with most of them staying as rain in the cities and snow in the mountains. Some of them in the far east of Wyoming extending into Nebraska and South Dakota turned severe with lots of lightning and strong winds. FutureCast models are showing even more severe thunderstorm activity as we go into those overnight hours in the far north east extending into the Dakotas. The storms will eventually turn into heavy snowfall going into those overnight hours with the low pressure system out to the east causing this continual rotational pattern. This will last throughout the day on Saturday going all the way into the evening time resulting in very heavy snowfall. As we go into Sunday, high pressure begins coming in to the north west which should help calm conditions down but still leave a little bit of isolated showers and cloud cover until Monday.

Our snow accumulation models are starting to agree with each other a little bit more so than what we saw yesterday. It still shows the heaviest of the snow being in the north east with Gillette getting over a foot and surrounding regions looking at about half a foot or less. The GFS model is showing even heavier snowfall around the Casper, Buffalo and Douglas region but the southeast just getting a small dusting. Future wind gusts are picking up with this low pressure system as we go into early tomorrow morning with over 60 mph gusts in the forecast. These gusts will last throughout the day going into the late evening time as well very strong winds once again. It only really starts to calm down after this entire system moves out to the Great Lakes region.

Overnight tonight, temperatures will be dropping down to below freezing levels for much of the region resulting in that heavy snowfall. Tomorrow’s high temperatures are not going to be a whole lot warmer than the lows which is to be expected it with such a strong cold front. Extended forecasts are showing conditions calming as we make our way into early next week and temperatures warming back up. Overall, it just looks like very nice conditions going into next week after this massive system pushes through.
