Kelly Walsh boys soccer wins the Casper Cup, girls finish scoreless draw
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - When Natrona County and Kelly Walsh met on the pitch earlier this season, the girls’ match finished in a draw, and the Trojan boys were able to find the back of the net repeatedly against the Mustangs. Things didn’t change much this time around in the Casper Cup.
The Fillies and the Lady Trojans contest finished in another tie. Both teams had opportunities to score in regulation and overtime, but it was a 0-0 scoreless affair.
They must have been saving all of the goals for the Mustangs and Trojans because Kelly Walsh wasted no time getting on the board. Less than 2:30 into the match, Hayden Hollinger booted a corner into the box, and the ball bounced its way to Beau Barclay, who tapped it into the back of the net for a 1-0 Kelly Walsh lead.
In the 10th minute, Natrona County was able to muster an equalizer. Zach Barrett found Anthony Nopens, and Nopens went top shelf to beat a diving Caden Allaire, which tied the score at 1-1. That marked the end of the excitement for fans in black and orange.
Kelly Walsh turned on the scoring machine. Britton Butler traversed his way through the entire Mustang defense, left NC’s goalkeeper in the dust, and found the back of the net three minutes after the equalizer to pull the Trojans back ahead 2-1.
Barclay headed in his second goal of the match after a shot off the crossbar to give Kelly Walsh a 3-1 lead that they would take into the half. Butler added another goal in the second half, and the Trojans as a team piled on five more to win the game 8-1.
Hayden Hollinger, Jackson Catchpole, Parker O’Neill and Erich Hulshizer scored the other four goals to hoist the rivalry trophy.
Both schools will head to Evanston this weekend. Natrona County will take on the Red Devils on Friday, and Kelly Walsh will get their crack at them on Saturday.
