Kelly Walsh boys soccer holds off top-ranked Jackson
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - It was a showdown between the top two boys teams in 4A on the pitch on Saturday. Kelly Walsh was able to prevail 2-1 thanks to the heroics of Jackson Catchpole and fearless defense.
It was a scoreless first half with both squads unable to cash in on several opportunities apiece.
In the second half, Catchpole came out with some fire. He picked up a yellow card, but that wouldn’t hold him down.
With less than 19 minutes to play in regulation, Fenton Carlson fed a pass into the box that looked like it was headed out of bounds, but Catchpole came sliding in to boot the ball into the back of the net.
That gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead, but Jackson would knock in an equalizer less than four minutes later.
Catchpole would come up clutch again soon. Parker O’Neill would serve a free-kick into the box, and Catchpole was there on a rebound to put it home.
That made the score 2-1, and it remained that way despite numerous challenges from the Broncs down the stretch.
Kameron Jimenez and Erich Hulshizer stepped up in a big way defensively to lighten the load for Kelly Walsh goalkeeper Caden Allaire.
The Kelly Walsh and Jackson girls went to overtime and finished in a 2-2 tie.
Both Trojan squads will head to Green River and Rock Springs next weekend.
