CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - This June, 21 Special Olympic athletes will represent Wyoming at the 2022 Special Olympic USA Games.

Competitors from across the US and Caribbean show up to compete in a variety of sports competitions.

“So the USA Games, it really is a once in a lifetime experience for our athletes, so a lot of people might compare it to the Olympics or Para-Olympics. It really is that once every four years chance for our athletes to go and shine as one at the highest national level,” said Special Olympics Wyoming CEO & President Jen Haines.

The Wyoming athletes will represent the state in eight different sports and a variety of competitions. Unified partners, coaches, and staff members will accompany athletes to the game. In total 45 Wyoming representatives will be making the trip to Florida this summer.

“Our athletes really get a lot of joy and experience courage from competing and training in all of these sports. It’s a great organization to watch our sports and our athletes or come volunteer. It’s just fun for everyone that’s involved, and our athletes are really, really looking forward to going to Orlando,” said Haines.

Special Olympics is a non-profit organization, and is asking for donations to help get all of the Wyoming athletes to the competition.

“The logistics of getting 45 people from Wyoming to Orlando is a nightmare at times, and it is very expensive at this point. We’re just so very thankful for community support, we really do rely heavily on private and community donations to make these things happen,” said Haines.
