Big Cool Off
29 March 2022
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Wyoming spring means big shifts in our weather patterns in very short time. That’s exactly what happened today as temperatures dropped off about 40 degrees and more in less than 24 hours with blowing snow on top of it. Most of these snow showers stayed to the far eastern side of the state as this cold front pushed through. That’s not to say that the rest of the state was spared as these showers were scattered all around. They started off as rain while temperatures were still warm, and then turned to snow as the mercury dropped below the freezing point. Unfortunately, on top of the low visibility brought upon by these showers, the rain on the roads turned into ice that was then covered by some accumulating snow.
To make matters even worse, the winds were not giving up either. Wind gusts were getting up to 50 MPH in some locations causing further delays and travel impacts. The gusts were coming in from the north resulting in wind chill values to drop down into the teens as we head into the overnight hours. There is some good news regarding the winds in the forecast. After tomorrow, the gusts will be calming down and coming in from the west, resulting in a sharp increase in our temperatures going into Thursday.
Overnight tonight, expect temperatures to drop off into the 20s for much of the state with wind chill values to get into the teens and single digits. High pressure is going to be pushing in from the northwest helping to clear out the clouds and precipitation overnight and into tomorrow morning. Tomorrow, clear skies are back, but the gusts from the north will be sticking around throughout much of the day. Highs won’t be increasing all that much either with much of the state seeing 40s for the highs and 50s for the lower elevation areas. Temperatures will continue increasing going into Thursday until a second cold front moves through overnight Thursday and into Friday. Conditions become more stable as we head into the weekend with mostly clear skies and 60s in the forecast.
