Prep Team of the Week: East Girls Basketball
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - For the first time in program history, Cheyenne East Girls Basketball has repeated as state champions and has finished the season undefeated.
The Lady T-Birds moved to (28-0) and their win streak extended to 39 straight victories on Saturday following a 51-41 win over Cody in the 4A State Championship.
“It’s been super exciting, especially going back to back it’s just like honestly the last couple days I’ve just been speechless because there’s really no words to how our team has played this year and how we came out of every game,” said East Senior Kiera Walsh.
According to wyoming-basketball.com, East has become the 42nd team in Wyoming high school basketball history to go undefeated in a season. The Lady T-Birds are the first Cheyenne team to go undefeated since the Central Boys went (23-0) in 1991. The East Girls are the only Cheyenne girls squad to not lose a game in a season and they join the 1947, 1962, and 1991 Central Boys teams as the lone Capital City schools to do so.
“Everything that I could’ve asked for in a team is what [my team is],” said Walsh. “They’re funny. I always can rely on them to make me laugh. They’re just always there when I need them. We always can have each other’s backs, support each other. We’re one big family in the end.”
The East Girls return multiple key contributors next season including two All-State players from 2020-2021 (Boden Liljedahl and Bradie Schlabs). The Lady T-Birds are also nine victories away from tying the all-time Wyoming girls basketball winning streak record of 48 in a row (Douglas).
Congratulations to the Cheyenne East Lady T-Birds Basketball team, State Champions and Prep Team of the Week.
