Prep Athlete of the Week: Stu Lerwick
PINE BLUFFS, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Pine Bluffs Boys Basketball junior Stu Lerwick had an all-time great game on Saturday versus Lingle-Fort Laramie. He led the Hornets with 50 points and added 12 rebounds, four assists, four blocks, and four steals.
“In the first couple minutes of the game, I hit a couple layups and I set a goal for myself the night before, I wanted to make 10 layups to start the game before I put any shots up and so I just wanted to put some layups through the hoop and that was kind of knew it was going,” said Lerwick.
Crazy thing: Lerwick had an off-shooting night. The junior hit just two three-pointers and he only collected four points from the free-throw line. Therefore, 40 of his 50 points came from two-point baskets alone. This incredible scoring feat is even more remarkable when considering that high school basketball games only have 32 minutes of game time.
Stu’s 50 points is a new Pine Bluffs single-game record. The record was previously held by now-Wyoming Cowboy Hunter Thompson. He scored 43 points in 2017.
“It’s almost like a cheat code, right? Because if you ever need anything, you can just kind of call on [Stu] and he’ll answer the call,” said Pine Bluffs Boys Basketball Head Coach Tyler Kimzey. “He’s not afraid [and] no moment’s going to be too big for him. He’ll be ready.”
The 84-48 win over Lingle was Kimzey’s 100th victory as a head coach. The victory also moved #1 Pine Bluffs to 18-2 overall this season. The Hornets have yet to lose to a 2A Wyoming school this year.
The 2A East Regional Tournament begins on Thursday. Burns and Pine Bluffs High Schools will serve as the host sites.
