DOUGLAS, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - For the Douglas Lady Bearcats, it has become the norm for Freshman Lauren Olsen to score the rock. Olsen led the entire state in scoring entering the weekend at 25.7 points per game, which is more than six points better than the second-leading scorer.

On Saturday against Burns, the former Prep Athlete of the Week had it all working in a 76-35 victory. She was finishing inside, knocking down threes and teammates were finding her on the fast break.

All of those things culminated in a career-high for the freshman. She ended the night with 44 points, which broke the single-game scoring record of 42 points set by Tonya Jorgenson in 1984.

“I didn’t even know how many points I had,” said Olsen after the game about her record-setting night. “My sister lied to me about the number, so she would think I would keep going, and they just didn’t tell me. So I didn’t even know until the moment everybody started [cheering], [Coach Helenbolt] took a timeout, and I finally realized and it was pretty cool.”

Olsen admitted that she never expected this coming into the year. “It’s pretty great to do all of this and have the success with my sister [Allison is a senior with the Lady Bearcats] and these amazing teammates.”

Next up to try and stop Olsen and her teammates will be Wheatland. Douglas will host the Bulldogs on Thursday.
