Kelly Walsh boys knock off #1 Sheridan
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - For the second consecutive week, the Kelly Walsh Trojans basketball team tipped off against the top-ranked team at 4A. It went better this time at home in Casper for Kelly Walsh.
The top-ranked Sheridan Broncs made the trip down to the Oil City on Friday, but they wouldn’t be heading home with a win.
The game began with both teams trading buckets, but the Trojans pulled away halfway through the first quarter and never looked back. The highlight of the game happened at the end of the first half when Kelly Walsh’s David DeBoer swished a full-court buzzer-beater to push the Trojans’ lead to 37-24.
Deboer finished with 12 points, and Kelly Walsh left the gym with a 69-54 victory.
Tyler Pacheco led the Trojans in scoring with 27 points, and Davis Crilly chipped in 21 points of his own.
In the girls’ game, it was a real back-and-forth affair. Kelly Walsh led Sheridan 28-24 at the half, but it would be unable to hold that lead.
Both teams took turns going on mini runs, but Sheridan found themselves up 61-58 with 19 seconds left in the game. Kelly Walsh’s Elayna Chafee knocked down a free-throw line jumper to push the score to 61-60 with seven seconds left in the ballgame.
Chafee was able to steal Sheridan’s inbounds pass, but the Lady Trojans were unable to get off a shot and fell 61-60.
Logann Alvar led the Lady Trojans with 18 points, and Peyton Carruth chipped in 12 points of her own.
Both Kelly Walsh teams will make the trip down to Cheyenne East next week.
