Natrona County prepares for State Spirit Competition
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Cheerleaders can be found on the sidelines of many different high school sporting events from football to basketball and more, but this week, they’ll have the opportunity to take center stage and compete against one another.
Wyoming’s State Spirit Competition will be held at the Ford Wyoming Center on Friday. Schools from across the Cowboy State will send their best cheerleaders and dancers to compete for state championship glory.
Natrona County’s Danika Lucero, a senior said this is something that her squad has been working towards all year. Kaitlyn O’Brien, Lucero’s teammate and a fellow senior, echoed that sentiment.
“Especially for me, and I know a lot of the other girls have been kind of waiting for this day where we can show everybody that we don’t just do sideline,” said O’Brien. “We don’t just do this. We compete against other teams that are really good.”
It will also be a rare opportunity for a school to take home multiple state titles in a single day with cheer categories of gameday, all-girl and co-ed. The NC girls also said they look at the day as a team bonding experience.
“It just creates friendships overall,” said Julia Dysert, a senior on the squad. “It’s definitely the [most fun] part of the whole year.”
“It’s just really fun to be with your teammates for the whole day to be competing at something you all want to win for,” said Lucero.
Lucero added that she was looking forward to seeing all of the hard work her team has put in. “We’re super tired, but we’re ready to show off.”
The Natrona County dance team will also compete on Friday. The action is set to begin inside the Ford Wyoming Center at 2:30 p.m.
