David Street Station Ice Rink Closes for Season
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The David Street Station ice skating rink is closing for the season on Jan. 17. The rink is closing earlier this year after reviewing previous seasons.
“Last year when we were trying to figure out with COVID if we were even gonna open the ice rink due to expenses. We actually decided to cut a month off because it cuts our chiller rental and our staffing down and it actually saves us between $20,000 to $30,000 just by doing that,” said David Street Station Operations Manager Jackie Landess.
According to David Street Station, the rink sees a drop in attendance after the first of the year. This causes the costs of operation to become higher than the revenue brought in during the later part of the season.
“Truthfully, after the first of the year once kiddos go back into school our number drop significantly. Some nights we’d have no skaters, and some nights we’d have two skaters and it’s very expensive to run the ice rink,” said Landess.
Landess says in the future, David Street Station hopes to be able to buy a chiller so that the ice rink can stay open longer.
The staff will use the rest of the winter season to plan and prepare for spring and summer events. The rink officially closes for the season at 9 p.m. on Jan. 17.
