Natrona County wrestling wins the Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament in Douglas

High school wrestlers from across the state of Wyoming made their way to Douglas this weekend to compete in the Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament.

DOUGLAS, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Over 25 schools from across Wyoming sent wrestlers to Douglas this weekend for the Shane Shatto Memorial Tournament. Plus, there were a few schools from surrounding states there to compete.

After Friday’s competition, Natrona County atop the team standings, and they ended Saturday still on top. They narrowly edged Thunder Basin 222-217.5 to bring home the team tournament championship.

Douglas, the hosts, finished not far behind in third with a total of 200.5 points.

The Mustangs had six top three finishers in their individual weight classes, and three of them were individual champions. Mustang Tate Tromble was the lightest of the bunch winning first place at 113 lbs.

Noah Sides won at 182 lbs., and Brendyn Nelson rounded out the trio by standing atop the podium for 195 lb. wrestlers. After receiving his first-place medal, Nelson said it feels “really good” to be the top guy in his weight class this weekend.

“It’s a really big confidence booster,” said Nelson. “I mean, it’s still [the] beginning of the season, so we still have a long ways to go and gotta keep pushing, but it’s a good way to kinda get the start of the season going off.”

Three Douglas Bearcats also won first place in their weight classes. Tanner Johnson came out on top at 106 lbs., and a pair of Ewings were victorious, too.

Keltan Ewing won first place at 138 lbs., and Lane did the same at 160 lbs.

From Cheyenne, East’s Liam Fox won his way to the top at 132 lbs., and Central’s Keagan Bartlett carried home a first-place medal for his work at 220 lbs.
