Sports Year in Review: Cheyenne East

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - It was another successful year of sports at Cheyenne East. Most importantly, the year went on without any major COVID interruptions.

That was true throughout Wyoming, but the Thunderbirds also won championships. East Athletic Director Jerry Schlabs said that his school’s success was in part due to the expectation that student-athletes will play multiple sports.

“We work hard to highlight those kids that are going the extra mile and doing those things for our school,” said Schlabs. “We really preach school over team over me and for the most part our kids really buy into it and have done a great job and, like I said, they make our jobs easy.”

Below are some of the highlights from 2021:

Girls Basketball: State Champions

Boys Basketball: Qualified for State Tournament

Wrestling: Four individual state champions (Landon Trujillo, Jackson Hesford, Blaise Ronnau, and Bradley Whitright)

Girls Soccer: Qualified for State Tournament

Boys Soccer: Qualified for State Tournament

Taliah Morris: Three-time track & field state champion (Indoor 55-Meter, Outdoor 200 Meter, Outdoor Long Jump), Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Year

Football: Qualified for State Playoffs, State Semifinalists

Tennis: Won Regional Tournament for first time in program history

Volleyball: Qualified for State Tournament
