WYDOT holiday road travel tips
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - As we gather with family and loved ones to celebrate the holiday season, the Wyoming Department of Transportation has some recommendations for folks who are getting on the roads, to take make sure everyone arrives at their destination safely.
WYDOT wants to remind everyone the roads will be a lot busier this time of year and to plan accordingly.
They recommend giving yourself extra time to arrive and drive cautiously.
Road conditions may vary in different counties and states so check the weather you’ll be driving through to know the conditions. Take extra time to drive through windy or icy conditions, and pass cars safely.
Know of the road construction, close offs, or accidents by checking travel apps before you go. Pay attention to the road and not your phone, text only when stopped.
Buckle up and watch out for ice or snow, and make sure you keep supplies in your car in case you spin out and have to wait in your car in icy conditions.
Keep things like kitty litter, a shovel, blankets, and non-perishable food items, water, flares, emergency cones, and battery charger in your car while you wait for help to arrive
Make sure when passing semi-trucks especially in windy conditions, make sure they can see you, give them space to maneuver, and move out of their tipping range and blind spots as quickly as possible.
If you are going to enjoy a cup of holiday cheer, make sure you designate a sober driver beforehand or call a taxi or rideshare app.
“Again I’d stress know before you go, buckle up and don’t drive impaired, especially as there are more people on the roads for the holidays,” said Jordan Achs, Public Relations Specialist, WYDOT.
