Mild Until the Holidays
21 December 2021
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - We’ve been seeing lots of strong winds throughout much of the Cowboy State today with gusts in the southeastern corner getting up to over 60 MPH. It was not as bad as the gusts we had come through last week, but it still caused a number of highway closures and traffic accidents regarding large profile vehicles. The warm temperatures were back as well with many of the highs getting close to record heat. The wind gusts certainly helped to make the “feels like” temperatures lower than they actually were. In terms of sky conditions, mostly clear thanks in part to the wind keeping away most of the moisture. If you aren’t a big fan of these warm temperatures and breezy conditions, then I do no have good news. Much of this pattern will remain in place throughout the week with the next cool down and chance of snow looking to be around Christmas Eve or Christmas depending on where you are in the state. The only chance for cloud cover and precipitation tomorrow will be in the far northwestern regions around cities like Jackson and Yellowstone.
Beyond the clouds and precipitation, the wind will be sticking around too. Tomorrow is expected to be windy for much of the eastern half of the state with most of the strong gusts staying around the Casper and Cheyenne region. They are not predicted to be as strong as what we saw today, but it is certainly possible to see 50 MPH gusts in isolated region. I expect that there will still be a number of delays and partial road closures on I25 and I80.
Overnight tonight, the lows are going to be staying above average with many of the larger cities staying above the freezing point. the breeze will calm down and the clouds will stay out of the picture. Tomorrow, much of the same is expected as we saw today. Expect highs in the mid 50s and 40s for the east and mostly 30s for the west and higher elevations. If you have any plans for travel this holiday season, now is the best time if traveling by car or plane as the weather is calm. I do not suggest it for those travelling by RV or carrying a trailer as the winds are still very dangerous for those vehicles.
