Cause undetermined in Saturday night fire
CASPER, Wyo. (PRESS RELEASE) - At approximately 6:56 p.m., Casper Fire-EMS units were dispatched to a reported structure fire on the 1900 block of Laramie Avenue in Casper. First arriving units noted fire on the exterior of a home, primarily involving a wooden deck attached to the structure. The first arriving engine company was able to quickly extinguish the flames while other units searched the home and ensured no fire had spread to the inside of the residence. The fire was out within minutes of arrival and all occupants were located exterior, having self evacuated.
There were no injuries as a result of the fire. There was significant damage to the siding of the residence and the attached deck, but occupants were able to remain in the residence. The cause of the fire is undetermined as of the time of this release.
Four engines, one ladder truck, and the on-duty Battalion Chief responded, along with an Investigator. Casper Fire-EMS also received assistance from dispatchers at the Public Safety Communication Center, officers from the Casper Police Department, medical personnel from Wyoming Medical Center, and technicians from the local utility companies.
Casper Fire-EMS would like to remind everyone that the wind conditions in Wyoming can greatly increase the speed at which an exterior fire spreads. Please be diligent in taking safety measures with all possible exterior heat sources. Below are a few suggestions:
-Ensure all exterior cooking appliances (grills/smokers) are well away from flammable materials and NOT under any deck or awning.
-Ensure all fire pits are at least 15 feet from all flammable materials and have an appropriate spark arrestor. Never leave fire pits unattended and have a hose or extinguisher nearby.
-Properly dispose of all smoking materials. Always use a non-combustible container and a non-combustible filler such as sand.
