Burns’ Emma Gonzales commits to South Dakota State Track & Cross Country
BURNS, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Emma Gonzalez’s passion for running began when she was in Junior High. But it was after State Track her freshman year that she realized she wanted to compete at the next level.
That dream became a reality on Tuesday afternoon as the Carpenter native and Burns High School student put pen to paper to make her commitment to South Dakota State official. The senior will run on the Jackrabbit Cross County and Track teams.
As a Bronc, Emma placed in the Top 10 and Top 5 multiple times at State Championships, including at the Spring 2021 meet where Gonzalez was the Runner-Up in the 3200 Meter Run. Gonzalez is the first Burns student-athlete to take her talents to the Division I level since 2013 and she is excited to represent her hometown and school.
“Especially having so few athletes that even go on to that next level and especially it being a smaller school, I just want to show that we can definitely have some really good athletes and that genuinely our community is just hard-working and that I just want to show everyone in my community that I can represent them well and just show them what I can do,” said Gonzalez.
