Preseason Preview: Cheyenne South Boys Basketball
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - In 2015-16, South Boys Basketball had its greatest season yet, winning 18 games and making a run to the school’s first basketball state championship appearance. South won a combined 21 games over the next two seasons but did not make the state tournament either year.
Jeff Bailey took over in 2018-19 and the team won just three, seven, and five games in the next three seasons. But now, there is a sense that a corner could soon be turned.
“Thinking back to my four-year plan when I first got here, we’re kind of on track with where I thought we’d be and where I wanted to be,” said Bailey.
In talking with a couple of players on the team, a few things are clear: The goal is to be the best team in Cheyenne and to get back to the state tournament and championship.
“We have a lot of the older guys now,” said South Senior Jeramiah Moyte. “We’ve all been playing since we were about eighth grade together. So I feel super confident in our ability to kind of be the top dogs now just because we’re older and we have that experience [level] and everything.”
Also, with those aspirations, the expectation level from the coaching staff has risen.
“The coaches [have been a lot harder on us] this year than in the past. They’ve been working us a lot harder, making sure we do what we have to do [like] get to class on time. Make sure our work is in. No D’s no F’s,” said South Senior Maureon Alexander. The coaches are really more on us and I really appreciate that from them and I think the team has bought in this year [a little bit differently] than we have in the past.”
The Bison start the regular season next week in Casper. South plays Rock Springs (at Kelly Walsh High School) on Dec. 9 and Natrona County (at Natrona County High School) on Dec. 10.
