CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Sunday evening, Christmas season is kicking off in Casper.

First there will be a Reindeer Relay around the park area, then the holiday square lighting ceremony will take place once it gets dark.

“I’m really excited this will be my first time at the Reindeer Relay and coming on board as the executive director I’m really looking forward to meeting all of the angel volunteers and people who are passionate about helping cancer patients,” said WFCC Executive Director Amy Womack.

The Reindeer Relay 5K will start at 4 p.m. Registration for the race is open online. In-person registration can be done up to fifteen minutes before the event.

Volunteers from the Angels Cancer Care Program and Wyoming Foundation for Cancer Care host the event.

Individuals and groups can participate, relay teams can have up to eight runners. The cost to participate is $20 per runner, all money raised will go to helping provide care for cancer patients.

“All of our funds raised go to help cancer patients in Wyoming. We can help patients with non-medical financial needs, it’s on a case-by-case basis there’s a lot of different things we can help with,” said WFCC Executive Director Abigail Strube.

There will be prizes awarded for individual male, individual female, and team first-place finishes.

After the race, participants can join other guests and enjoy annual Holiday Square lighting ceremony.

The event is back after not taking place in 2020. Sunday is the first night Christmas lights will be on in Healing Park, afterwards they will be on every night until Jan 1. The lights will turn on at 5 p.m. and the light show will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The decorations in the park are designed to be walked around, but they can also be seen from cars on the road, for people who just want to drive by.

Almost all of the lights and other features within the park have been donated by local businesses.

“Well over 20 years it just got bigger and bigger and a few years ago we added the light show to music and we just kind of add stuff every year,” said Keep Casper Beautiful Coordinator Beth Andress.

Santa and Mrs. Clause will be at the event, kids cannot sit on their laps but they can bring a letter with their Christmas list for Santa to take back to the North Pole.

Hot chocolate and cookies will be served while supplies last.
