CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - A certain Golden Retriever has been representing Cheyenne by getting some air-time and winning trophies in the process.

Jaeger has been traveling the world and has recently earned his third straight victory for being the best golden retriever in big air events.

While he’s at the top now, he, like all athletes, had to paw his way up the bottom.

“We started out and we had no idea what we’re doing. We showed up with a tennis ball and a backpack and he still jumped into semi-pro for finals. After that, we kept going and going and going and he’s just improved remarkably as time’s gone on,” said Ron Lauscher, Jaeger’s handler and self-proclaimed “proud poppa.”

After more time, practice, and exposure to the competitions, Jaeger began to win the events he was going to, and the winning hasn’t stopped.

Now, his success has hit top dog status regardless of breed.

“Jaeger achieved super elite status, which means that he averages, for his top 5 jumps, over 25 feet. So, his average last year was 25 feet, 8 inches. He’s the only golden retriever right now in the world that is ranked as super elite, so it’s a really big deal,” said Lauscher.

Jaeger will likely continue to set the mark for golden retrievers, but he’s not just doing it for himself. Rather, he’s representing the Capital City at every stop along the way.

“We travel all over. We’ve gone from Oklahoma to Iowa to Arizona, and the whole time we do it, we represent Cheyenne.”

The team’s dream is for an event to be held in Cheyenne, so that Jaeger can have a hometown competition.
