State Semifinals: #1E Torrington
TORRINGTON, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - #1E Torrington Football’s recent history has been one of “almost”. The Trailblazers have been to three state championships in the last four years, but have yet to win the program’s first state title since 1990.
However, the team is once again in the State Semifinals and is one win away from another opportunity to get a ring.
“I hope it’s redemption. I’m hungry,” said Torrington Football Head Coach Russell Steinmetz. “Hope the players are hungry and yeah we gotta build off of what we did not complete last year.”
Standing in Torrington’s path to Laramie is #2W Lovell. The Bulldogs are riding a six-game winning streak and own an (8-2) record.
The defense stands out as the Bulldogs have allowed more than eight points just three times in 2021.
“They got a big, big D-End. Number 70…he’s probably like 6′3 280 and they got two other D Tackles, they’re just big kids,” said Torrington Senior Chase Miller. “So we’re gonna have to come in low, because that #70 carries the ball sometimes, he’ll be like a blocker and everything. So if we do go tackle, it’s gotta be at like hips and down, just running through it. So we just gotta be a tough team mentally and physically for these guys I think.”
With a win, Lovell will reach its first state championship game since 2012. The Blazers hope to go to back-to-back title games for the first time since 2017 & 2018.
“I’m excited to get back and hopefully make it to state, get a rebuttal game but pretty nerve-wracking but I’m pretty confident as well,” said Torrington Senior Deagan Keith.
Torrington and Lovell kickoff from Torrington at 6 p.m.
