CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - For the 13th time in 15 seasons, Cheyenne East Football is in the state semifinals. It’s sometimes hard to forget that the program was not always this good. Before Chad Goff became the head coach in 2006, the T-Birds had not won a state title since 1974. The program has won three state championships since Goff moved up from his assistant role and now the expectation is to win and improve.

“They came in this season and they practiced themselves and I just stood there and watched to see what they were doing,” said East Football Head Coach Chad Goff talking about summer workouts. “They are doing all the same drills we do all the time and they built off of what happened in the years past and they added the younger kids. And so [there were] nights we had every level quarterback throwing out there. We had every level receiver. We had every level lineman out here. Kids were coming here to get better.”

If the #3 T-Birds (8-2) win on Friday, East will reach its second straight state championship. But in order to do that, the Thunderbirds need to beat #2 Rock Springs (9-1) in Western Wyoming.

“[It’s] my senior year [and it’s also] a lot of the guys [over here’s senior year’s too],” said East Senior Lineman Gavyn Aumiller. “So [this is, if not our last game,] one of our last games so we’re gonna come out, lay everything on the field, and hopefully we’re going to come out with the win.”

Rock Springs defeated Kelly Walsh 42-21 in the quarterfinals and the Tigers also beat East 31-15 in the regular-season finale. Of course, the T-Birds are trying to flip the script and get one more week on the field with their football family.

“This group this year, everyone’s so close,” said East Junior Wide Reciever/Cornerback Garet Schlabs. “We’ve been together since second and third grade a lot of that and everyone’s so close and cares about each other and that’s such a big thing in what we’re trying to do in our goals throughout this season.”

Cheyenne East and Rock Springs kickoff from Tiger Stadium in Rock Springs on Friday at 6 p.m.
