Quarterfinals Preview: #8 Cheyenne Central
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - #8 seed Cheyenne Central Football (2-7) plays #1 seed Sheridan (8-1) on Friday night in the 4A Wyoming State Football Quarterfinals.
When the Broncs and Indians faced off in the regular season, Sheridan romped all over the Tribe in the first half and eventually built up a 31-7 lead. Central did come back a bit, losing 31-20 and the team said there were lessons to be learned from the experience.
“Going back on that game....scored on our first drive and then fumble, fumble back to back and so I think the biggest thing is not giving them extra possessions,” said Central Junior Quarterback Keagan Bartlett. ”Good teams take advantage of that.”
In the September 10 regular-season meeting, things started about as bad as they could for Central. The Tribe’s opening kickoff went out of bounds and the Broncs decided to have Central rekick it. Sheridan then proceeded to take the rekick to the house for a kickoff return for a touchdown. The Indians scored on their ensuing drive but did not put up any more points in the first half.
“Special teams was a nightmare that game and turnovers,” said Central Football Head Coach Mike Apodaca. “Sheridan’s just such a good, strong, consistent team that if you give them any extra chances they are going to just make you pay and I thought especially the first half that was it.”
According to wyoming-football.com, Central and Sheridan have faced each other 70 times in the regular season, with the first meeting on November 2, 1912. The Broncs lead the all-time series 42-27-1 in those games.
However, in the postseason, Sheridan a perfect (6-0) against the Indians. Their first postseason meeting was in the 1931 State Championship, which the Broncs won 13-9. The most recent playoff meeting was in the 2019 4A State Semifinals. Sheridan won that game 62-35.
In the 2021 postseason edition, kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Sheridan High School.
