Natrona County prepares for 2020 quarterfinals rematch
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The high school football playoffs kick off on Friday, and Natrona County and Kelly Walsh will both be a part of the 4A playoff field. The Mustangs will host Thunder Basin after finishing the regular season on a tear.
NC won its final three games, including a crucial 28-14 victory in Gillette over the Bolts. That victory, along with some help from Sheridan in the final week of the regular season, allowed the Mustangs to have the rematch in the playoffs in Casper.
In the 2020 quarterfinals, Thunder Basin held on to knock Natrona County out of the playoffs with a 19-14 victory. The Bolts would eventually lose to Cheyenne East in the state championship game.
Natrona County Head Coach Steve Harshman said his group just needs to continue taking care of one another.
“What I really appreciate about these guys and really love about them, they’ve really rallied around each other,” said Harshman before practice on Wednesday. “They really like each other, I think and have really formed a really strong team, and once you get that thing going, ya know, then it becomes pretty powerful, and you become a pretty tough team to beat.”
Harshman added that adversity has made this team stronger. “We’ve really improved a lot, and we’re still getting better. We’ve gotten a lot better this week, and I’m sure Thunder Basin has, too.”
“It should be a great game. These games in late October are always fun.”
The game will kick off Friday at 6 p.m. at Cheney Alumni Field.
