Quarterfinals Preview: #3 Cheyenne East
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Cheyenne East Football coaching staff challenged its players last week to treat their regular-season finale like a playoff game.
East (7-2) came up short in 31-15 loss to Rock Springs, but that is okay because now the real postseason begins.
The Thunderbirds are the #3 seed in the 4A Wyoming Football State playoffs and host #6 seed Campbell County (4-5) in the quarterfinal on Friday night. The Camels are an improved team and the program has won its most game since the Gillette school split in 2017. CC is also big too with several physically imposing players.
“They’ve always had a good size on them,” said Senior Offensive Guard Elijah Collins. “Their front two guys are just like I think 250 each, they’re super big. But me and Gavyn Aumiller, we’re pretty big too, so we should be able to get the job done.”
The Camels played tough against East in the regular season. The T-Birds had to come from behind to beat Campbell 27-21 in Cheyenne.
“They got a big back and definitely seeing last week how we played against Rock Springs, [they’re] gonna be attacking that C Gap and right off the tackle, kind of preparing for that because they do have a bigger back and they have that young quarterback, he can sling it downfield and he makes plays with his feet,” said East Senior Wide Receiver/Tight End/Linebacker Hayden Pafford. “He’ll scramble out of the pocket and keep the play alive so [we need to be] making sure that we’re staying on their receivers the whole play.”
#3 East and #6 Campbell County kickoff from Okie-Blanchard Stadium at 6 p.m. on Friday.
