Snow for the West, Now for the East
12 October 2021
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The big cities in the northern and central regions of the state got their first snowfall of the season overnight. Snowfall totals are still coming in, but as of this morning, they range anywhere from almost foot near the mountains to about an inch in the lower elevations. Keep in mind, this system is just getting started so we are still expecting another round of snow throughout the day and overnight tonight. This time, it’ll just stick toward the eastern and southern regions of the state.
There is some rain and a good amount of thunderstorm activity in the Nebraska panhandle and South Dakota as the front moves through with a few places to the east of the viewing area under severe thunderstorm watches. Once temperatures there drop to levels below freezing, it’ll turn into snow. My issue with that is the water on the roads freezing over, so please slow down and give yourself extra time while driving today. Many of the roads in central Wyoming have weather warnings and slower speed limits in effect with a couple of them being completely closed off due to blowing snow. Wind on the eastern side of the state will be a big concern overnight as it will be dangerous to drive. Gusts are expected to be over 50 MPH overnight tonight and lasting until tomorrow evening so expect a lot of road closures for large vehicles and maybe even small vehicles due to blowing snow.
Overnight tonight, much of the entire state will be below freezing in the 20s causing the snow to accumulate until the next day. Tomorrow, highs will be warming back up to temperatures above freezing, resulting in the snow melting away causing slushy conditions on the roads. Because of that, expect road delays tomorrow and give yourself some extra time to get to work. If the snow is getting you down, don’t worry because we will be warming right back up to more seasonable temperatures by the weekend.
