CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Legislation legalizing sports betting went into effect on Sept. 1, and DraftKings was one of two sportsbooks to be operating in the state from the beginning.

The launch of legal sports betting coincided with the beginning of the college football and NFL seasons, which are two of the most bet on bet on sports properties.

DraftKings Director of Race and Sportsbook Operations Johnny Avello said betting in Wyoming being legalized at the beginning of those seasons has been beneficial.

“I think you get a better sense of how to bet and where the line should be,” said Avello about bettors being able to follow the trends as the season goes along as opposed to jumping in midway through the season.

The statistics from wagers placed in Wyoming on DraftKings during the first month of the season have not been terribly surprising. The University of Wyoming Cowboys come in as the top bet on college football team in the state. National favorites Notre Dame, Alabama and Michigan also finished in the top five.

Two of University of Wyoming’s first four games ranked in the top five of the most bet on college football games during the first month of the season.

There were some surprises from the top NFL teams bet on DraftKings. The Tampa Bay Buccanneers came in atop the most bet on teams in Wyoming during the first month of action.

Popular NFL teams made up the rest of the top five. The Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys were the other most bet on teams on DraftKings in Wyoming.

All of the top five bet on NFL games on DraftKings were games that drew big television audiences. The five matchups were all featured primetime showdowns.

Avello said, “Those are the games that you’ll see that attract the most betting opportunities across all our jurisdictions.”

After DraftKings has been live in the state of Wyoming for just over a month, Avello said he couldn’t be happier with how things are going, and it’s been a “magnificent start” for the company in Wyoming. He added that there are still bigger things to come for legalized betting and many more things for people to look forward to on DraftKings.
