Phase two project started for Douglas justice system
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Ground has been broken for a new courthouse to be built near the police station and sheriff’s office. A Converse County official said this will make the justice system operate more efficiently.
The Circut and District Court, County Attorney and support staff will be all in one place. Construction started about a month ago and is paid for by the mineral industry. “We were able to do this without raising any taxes. The funds for this project come from the mineral industry. The great increase of mineral activity we’ve seen over the last decade has allowed us to put money away to do projects like this,” said Jim Willox, the Chairman of Converse County Commissioners.
Moving the courthouse closer to the jail will help with efficiency. “We are currently hauling inmates across town from the jail to our courthouse which raises current both some security and logistic issues,” Willox said.
The current courthouse will be expanded and used for other businesses like treasurer or clerk. This project is expected to be complete in January or Feburary 2023.
