CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Laramie County Community College (LCCC) is working to break down the barriers of traditional education in the form of 8 Pathways.

The Communications and Creative Arts (CCA) Pathway was constructed so right-brained students can move forward with their higher education, without committing to a specific major, so they can focus on finding their passion.

One of the key benefits of the Pathways Programs is the ability to start out at a general level within a pathway, able to sample different courses, without losing credits.

“The day of the first day of semester, we switched all my classes, went to class, just like that. No money lost, no time lost. It was just like okay cool, you’re a theatre major now,” said Jessica Creswell, a theatre major in the CCA Pathway.

Creswell began her path as an Art major, but fell in love with Theatre along the way.

Students like Jessica are able to navigate the options available within the CCA Pathway, like Fine Arts, Theatre, Humanities or English.

CCA Pathway coordinator, J. O’Brien, says this pathway was created to be not only flexible, but also realistic as a career opportunity.

“Pathways are 100% designed to be a partnership with the community. Part of Pathways is that we are developing advisory committees that are comprised of people from the community, from the region, who are industry experts that know what is needed in the workforce. Other education partners who know what other students are doing in high school and what they need to know when they get to the university,” said O’Brien.

Jessica says the program truly helped her find her passion, and she hopes it can help more students like her.

“I’m just one case of ‘went in for something, didn’t like it. Took one general education class, fell in love with it, switched, and has not looked back’. I’m just one of them. And that’s great to me, because it’s very useful, and very good!” said Creswell.

The CCA Pathway offers programs, typically completed within 2-3 years, that prepare students to move on to a four-year college, or in some cases, employment directly out of the program.
