Prep Athlete of the Week: Caden Cunningham
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - At just 18 months old, Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week Caden Cunningham had a plastic golf club in his hands.
The now junior at Cheyenne Central High School spent the first several years of his life in Florida. But despite the early introduction to golf, Caden fell away from the game for a few years when he was young. He said he was overwhelmed by the level of competition in the Sunshine State.
That stoppage in playing did not last forever though. When Caden and his family moved to Cheyenne, he decided to give golf a try once again.
“[After I moved to Cheyenne] I realized that if I worked hard enough, I could start competing with top-level kids out here and then I was starting to compare myself to kids back home and kids around the country and I think that really pushed me was I just need a little bit of like a pick me up,” said Caden.
It’s a good thing that he got that pick me up because Caden has turned into a really good high school golfer. The junior was Even and in first place after the first day of last week’s 4A East State Qualifier. Despite a tough Day 2, he finished in second place at +11. The Indians also finished in first place.
Central Head Golf Coach Mike Lepore said he expects Caden to be in the mix for a state championship at the 4A Golf State Tournament this week (September 17-18) in Jackson.
“The thing I like about him is he wants to try and he wants to get better and those are the types of kids that you like to see,” said Lepore. “Those are the type of kids that are gonna be the [Central Grad and future PGA Golfer] Josh Creel’s of the world. They’re gonna go do something down the road past high school.”
Caden said he wants to golf in college.
Good luck at State and congratulations to Caden Cunningham, Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week.
