CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Bears across Wyoming are becoming more active as we transition into fall as they search for food before winter hibernation.

There are going to be more bears out and about, so the chances of running into one will increase. To protect yourself and bears, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is telling Wyomingites to be aware, make yourself known if you’re out walking. It can help if you have a group of friends or if you make lots of noise while you’re out.

Another thing that can help, Game and Fish said, it locking up food.

“The number one thing that people can do is secure attractants,” said Sara DiRienzo, Public Information Officer of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. “Attractants are things like garbage, human food, pet food, or even bird seed. And bears, if they get, what we call, a food reward, they’ll be motivated to come back again. So the number one thing that you can do to keep yourself safe and bears safe is secure those attractants.”
