CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Jennifer Wistisen’s science students created paper airplanes to learn about the scientific method. This science class has students in different grades. Wistisen said they are where they need to be.

“Everyone is treated like the unique individual they are,” Wistisen said. Excel Academy students can learn above or at their grade level. They are willing to let students work below their grade level. “In the beginning, we were called the gifted and talented school and do have students there, but that’s not entirely the case. We allow students to come in if this is the right fit,” Wistisen said.

This school resembles the ones from the local district, but Wistisen said her program is different once people see the meat and bones of the program. “We let students work at their own pace. There’s also not as much group instruction,” Wistisen said.

Excel Academy has been at its Jefferson Street location since 2019. This year they have noticed more interest from community members. “We had a huge influx of people checking it out and asking questions. We decided with our board that it was time to increase a little,” Wistisen said.

The cap for students used to be 35 and it was bumped up to 41 this year. Wistisen is open for students or families to observe Excel Academy classes. They are located at 500 S. Jefferson Street.
