Riverton football drops Week 0 opener against Powell

It was not the start to the 2021 season that the Riverton Wolverines were looking for, but a late touchdown provided a glimmer of hope of what may be to come this season.

RIVERTON, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - It was a perfect evening in Riverton Friday with football in the air. The Wolverines hosted Powell to kick off their season in Week 0.

The Wolverines sported some brand new all-black uniforms that had the team looking good, and the team started the game well.

Junior Quarterback Nathan Hutchison was scrambling outside the pocket, which led to some nice gains to open receivers. It was his scrambling that caught up to him though.

After getting a few first downs, Hutchison weaved his way out of a sack and threw one up for grabs. Powell’s Karson Lamb swooped it out of the air and ran it back inside the 10 to set up a short rushing touchdown from Reed Smith.

Smith’s score staked Powell with a 7-0 lead, and the Panthers never looked back. The team took advantage of some short fields and took a 30-0 lead into halftime.

The Panthers added to the lead right out of the gates in the second half with a long passing play for another touchdown.

Hutchison was able to get the Wolverines on the scoreboard late with a strike over the middle to Tanner Johnson, who caught the ball and kept running for a long touchdown. Johnson would add the extra point himself.

The final score was 37-7.

Riverton will look to carry the momentum of the Hutchison and Johnson connection into their game next week at home against Cody.
