Riverton’s Lucas Engle is one to watch heading into 2021 high school football season
The 3A two-time All-State wide receiver is excited to make more big plays on the outside heading into his final season in Riverton.
RIVERTON, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Earlier in the week, Kelly Walsh’s Cameron Burkett and East’s Gavin Goff were honored as Wyoming News Now Prep Athletes of the Week (to watch for in 2021). Riverton Senior Wide Receiver and Cornerback Lucas Engle has already established himself as worth the price of admission heading into his senior season.
The 6′6 Engle has stood tall amongst the competition at the 3A level in stature and through his play since he first laced his cleats for the Wolverines.
He’s a two-time 3A All-State honoree at wide receiver, and he’s led the Big Red in receiving yards each of the last two years. As a junior last season, Engle hauled in 32 passes for 583 yards.
One of his signature performances came against Rawlins at the end of the regular season last fall. Engle broke free for 117 receiving yards on two catches including one for a score.
Engle said he just loves making big plays at receiver. “A catch can really change the momentum of the game,” said Engle. “[When you], make a 60-yard catch that puts you in a better position. [It] just changes the entire flow of the game.”
Riverton Head Football Coach Troy Anderson said he’s excited to see Engle’s growth as a team leader heading into this season.
“Lucas is a real quiet kid,” said Anderson. “You gotta get to know him. The thing I’ve really loved and noticed about Lucas as we’ve moved into this year from the summer. He’s starting to really open up and blossom.”
Anderson is excited to see that translate to the field.
Engle and the rest of the Wolverines will open their season on Aug. 27 at home against Powell.
