Prep Athletes of the Week (to watch for in 2021): Cameron Burkett & Gavin Goff
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Wyoming News Now Sports Department will name one Cheyenne and one Casper high school football senior as a Prep Athlete of the Week (to watch for in 2021) each week until the high school football regular season begins.
Casper Selection: Cameron Burkett, Kelly Walsh
Burkett was a monster of a back in 2020, rushing for 99.1 yards per game. The Trojan also scored 17 rushing touchdowns and one passing touchdown last season. His play earned him the 4A First Team All-State At-Large Offense selection and he was also named an All-State Second Team running back.
“When I step on the field, first play, [I’m] nervous. I get the jitters every first play,” said Burkett. “After the first play, it’s game on. I’m pedal to the metal until the end of the whistle and once that whistle blows I go to the sideline get feedback [on] what I need to do better.”
Cameron is also the 2020 4A Shot Put State Champion, which he earned with a 61′1 throw.
Cheyenne Selection: Gavin Goff, Cheyenne East
Gavin was a receiver and defensive back on last year’s state title team. He scored nine touchdowns in that offensive role and he was a First Team All-Stater on both sides of the ball.
Now, he takes on a new challenge as the starting QB for the East T-Birds, something the kid who grew up playing quarterback has been looking forward to for a long time.
“It’s a dream come true being the quarterback for East. It’s been something I’ve about for 18 years,” said Goff. “There’s a responsibility to the team. I’m the guy they look for to get stuff rolling. That was the same way with our quarterbacks in the past. It’s a responsibility, but I’m ready for it.”
Good luck to both of our Prep Athletes of the Week (to watch for in 2021): Cameron Burkett and Gavin Goff
