CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -It was a great weekend for WYCO Softball at the Wyoming State Tournament. 14U was crowned as state champion, 16U and 12U were runners-up, and 10U placed fourth.

Focusing on the 14′s, the team had multiple bumps along the road earlier in the sason, losing to some good teams from other states, but WYCO 14U Head Coach Fred Barrandey said his team may not be state champions now if not for those earlier frustrating moments.

“We go and face these Colorado teams, so [that] we’re ready to go and face these Wyoming teams at the end of the year,” said Barrandey. “I really think that without doing those competitions, we would’ve had a long road ahead of us at state, so it was valuable.”

A really cool story inside of the 14U team was the emergence of Aleah Brooks. The pitcher and infielder was not on the squad in 2020 but was apparently accepted with open arms, even becoming the team’s leader.

Brooks said that in return for the love she received, she wanted to play hard for her new team this season.

“[The welcome I got from the team] was the start and then just our bond as a team is just great,” said Brooks. “All those girls are like my family, we’re just so close.”

2022 WYCO Tryouts take place on August 3-4 at Dunbar Softball Field in Lions Park in Cheyenne.
