CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Natrona County High School’s Robert Douglas was a man amongst boys competing in track and field this year. His performances from the regionals to state placed him far above the pack.

Douglas is the third Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Year recipient, which Douglas said it was a great feeling to earn some recognition for all of his hard work.

“I think it’s a pretty good feat that someone who does track was able to get this award over someone who does like football maybe or like basketball or something like that,” said Douglas. “You know so, I’m very happy about that, too. And just you know maybe I’ll put track out there more a little bit, people might start doing it more.”

High school athletes might be motivated to compete in track and try to topple Douglas’ marks, but it’ll be a tall task. His hard work paid off in competition this year.

In the Indoor State Championships, Douglas took home gold medals in the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles.

Outdoor track is arguably where Douglas’ star shined brightest. At the 4A West Regionals, Douglas dominated all four events he entered.

He carried that momentum with him to the 4A State Championships at Kelly Walsh. He took titles in the 100-meter dash, 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.

“We had some of the fastest sprinters in the state on my team,” said Douglas. “Competing with them all the time in practice, you rise to your level, you rise to your competition in those situations, and I think that’s what really put me over the top this year.”

Douglas also played football this year for the Mustangs. He will continue his athletic career at North Dakota State University on the track and field team.

“I’m probably going to work the hardest I ever have in my life, and I’m excited for that,” said Douglas about his next step at NDSU. “That’s not a bad thing.”

He set an NC record of 6.51 in the 55-meter dash ensuring he leaves a legacy at the school, which Douglas said was “cool,” but it’s not the only thing he’s proud of as a Mustang.

“They’re not gonna remember me for that but other things, too, you know. Like just for who I was as a person.”

Congratulations to Robert Douglas, Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Year. He is the first recipient of the award from Casper.
