CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Cheyenne was dubbed “Hell on Wheels” in the 1860s due to the mayhem that surrounded the Union Pacific Railroad, but now that name has a new meaning in the form of an actual rodeo.

For the second year in a row, Visit Cheyenne and the Capital City-based Hell on Wheels Rodeo Company, LLC. have teamed up with the goal of putting together quality rodeos. These rodeos are meant to lead up to and fill the appetite of those who won’t be at The Daddy of ‘Em All.

“So many of our tourists come to Cheyenne to “Live the Legend” and obviously they get that wonderful experience during the few weeks that CFD is going on, but we wanted to offer something a little bit more,” said Hell on Wheels Rodeo Company, LLC. Co-Owner Cindy DeLancey.

DeLancey pointed out that rodeo is the official pastime of Wyoming and she also said it is “Absolutely American”.

Hell on Wheel has become an opportunity for local cowboys and cowgirls to compete as well. Therefore, it is no wonder that attendee reactions encouraged a second year of the event.

“We’ve gotten great reaction from visitors to the community and people in the local community as well,” said Visit Cheyenne Vice President & Director of Sales and Marketing Jim Walter. “We sold some season tickets this year, so those are locals that live here and that are taking advantage of that opportunity and it really works for us to really have a great opportunity to put this product out in front of people.”

Friday evening saw just the second of seven Hell On Wheels rodeos at Archer Rodeo Arena. The remainder of the rodeos are on July 16, August 6, August 13, August 27, and September 3. All of this summer’s Hell on Wheels events include a Chuck Wagon Dinner at 5:30 p.m., and the beginning of the eight traditional rodeo events at 7 p.m.
