CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Cheyenne Family YMCA is offering lifeguard classes to the Cheyenne community. The classes are scheduled July 15-18 and will have you certified and ready to dive-in by July 19 at the latest.

The classes teach students life-saving skills and swimming skills required of a lifeguard. The course is a combination of online-learning and pool skill sessions.

Applicants are required to have basic swimming skills and will conduct a pre-swim of 300 yards on the front and breaststroke. Swimmers will have to be comfortable diving to retrieve a weight from the bottom of the pool.

The class begins Thursday evening and will continue Friday evening through the daytime hours of Saturday and Sunday.

“Right now, we have a lifeguard shortage in the United States and so it is a vital skill we have in order to keep the neighborhoods safe and the community safe. We need to have qualified lifeguards who are able to perform the skill-set of saving kids or adults in their time of need, so we definitely need more lifeguards in the community,” said Christy Colgate, Director of Aquatics at Cheyenne Family YMCA.

Colgate said most the pools in Cheyenne are hiring. To apply for a lifeguard position at the YMCA click here.
