CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Throughout the month of July, the Wyoming News Now sports department will name four Prep Athletes of the Year, instead of the usual Prep Athlete of the Week. Two boys and two girls will be selected.

Cheyenne Central’s Lawson Lovering (Prep Athlete of the Week: December 28, 2020) has been chosen first after a phenomenal 2020-2021 season and high school career.

The Central grad and now-Colorado Men’s Basketball freshman averaged 13.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.8 blocks during his senior season, all while shooting a state-best 67% from the field.

With Lawson dominating in the post, the Indians went (22-3) this season and won the 2021 Wyoming 4A Boys Basketball State Championship.

“I’m just a winner. I may not get all the individual stats and everything, but I just know how to get the job done and win games.”

Lawson was a star among many good players this past season for the Indians, and, as he mentioned, not all of his stats may jump off the page. Therefore, he has not won all of the individual accolades that the state’s consensus best player would likely win.

Lawson is known to not be in it for those individual accolades, but, when they do come, he said it means something.

“It just validates me basically for all the hard work that I’ve been putting in.”

Congratulations to Lawson Lovering, Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Year.
