Prep Athlete of the Week: Kaliff Guevara
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week Kaliff Guevara soared above the competition this season for East High School.
He’s not a pilot, but Guevara does love spending time in the air.
At the state track and field meet at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, Guevara won the 4A triple jump with a 48′7 flight. This broke an over 30-year-old East High School record previously held by former NFL player Troy Dumas.
Guevarra said he was aware of Dumas’ record, but he was a little bit lost when they told him he had actually broken it. When it finally hit him, he said, “That’s amazing.”
He also finished third in the 4A long jump and competed in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 4x100 meter relay.
East Track and Field Coach Jesse Blunn said Guevara is really driven to excel and has a serious love for the triple jump. “He’s kind of one of those ones other high school kids don’t understand because he’s so driven,” said Blunn.
Over the past weekend, it was another big weekend for Guevara. He graduated from East High School and signed his letter of intent to continue his athletic career at the University of Wyoming while at his graduation party.
“Since I’ve had college in my mind, I knew I don’t want to go anywhere far. UW is probably the best place. I’ve been there a hundred times, and I just love the campus,” said Guevara. “So when they finally reached out to me and said, ‘Hey, we’ll give you an athletic scholarship.’ I was like, ‘This is a dream come true.’”
Congratulations to Kaliff Guevara, Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week.
