Prep Team of the Week: Cheyenne Central Girls Track & Field
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - This week, the Wyoming News Now sports team has decided to name a Prep Team of the Week rather than an individual athlete.
Cheyenne Central Girls Track & Field is the selection after being the lone Capital City squad to win a spring sports state championship.
“We have a great supporting cast and, with these type of girls and the type of coaches that we have, it’s no wonder that those girls have been so dominant year after year,” said Lady Indians Head Coach Sean Wilde.
Perhaps the most impressive part of Central’s state title win, the program’s third in three straight state meets, was that the Tribe did not place first in any events, proving the importance of depth throughout a roster.
This team also battled adversity much of the way, with COVID-19 hanging over the nation’s head and a large amount of snow and other inclement that affected the season.
“Like with the and snow everything it pushed me personally to do my best [in] the times we had at practice to get those reps in and try and make them the best reps I can,” said Central Senior Thrower Dakota Lobmeyer.
And perhaps practicing the bad weather actually helped Central, as conditions on Day 2 (Friday, May 21) of the WHSAA State Track & Field meet in Casper were particularly harsh.
“We were able to compete on Friday when the weather was so bad in those horrible conditions because we’ve been used to it,” said Central Senior Elizabeth Prescott. “So it kind of worked to our advantage almost.”
Congratulations to the Central Girls Track & Field team, State Champions and Prep Team of the Week
