Prep Athlete of the Week: Trista Stehwien
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - This first season of sanctioned Wyoming high school softball has been as much about growth as it has been about competing.
Many teams have a big mix of skill levels, with girls who have played for years and girls who have never played the game at all.
Therefore, teaching is important and Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week Trista Stehwien has taken some teammates under her wing.
The sophomore is also dominating, slashing an incredible .520/.579/.920 (batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage) with nine doubles, four triples, and a home run.
“She jokes around sometimes about “I’m not coming to practice tonight” once or twice,” joked East Head Softball Coach Adam Galicia talking about her work ethic. “I was like, “your car doesn’t know any other direction, but to go practice”. So it’s pretty nice to have her around and the other girls feed off her.”
Trista is certainly capable of teaching inexperienced players new things, but she said that teaching them the fundamentals has actually helped her game improve too.
“I guess helping the newer girls learn new things, it’s walked me through those smaller steps again,” said Trista. “I think that’s made me even better, especially the infielding drills going little by little and getting those small technique things [down].”
Trista said she hopes to eventually play softball in college. But that when she is not on the diamond, she enjoys outdoor activities like camping and fishing.
Congratulations to Trista Stehwien, Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week.
