CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - In a moment years in the making, DeWayne Saulsberry was named the head coach of the LCCC Men’s Basketball program on April 23.

“When I came here years ago, it was one of my goals to be the head coach here and as you keep going on you just don’t know if it’s going happen and then things happen,” said Saulsberry. “So I wanted it really really bad. My family wanted it bad and I’m glad we were able to check it off.”

Saulsberry was a Golden Eagles assistant coach from 2007-2020. He was then the interim head coach of the program for the 2020-2021 season.

In that year, LCCC finished first in the Region IX North division and he was named the Region IX North Coach of the Year.

Despite the years of experience, Saulsberry was still uneasy during the interview process.

“Definitely some nervousness, but seems like I’ve been preparing for those interviews for years,” said Saulsberry. “So, I was nervous but, once it was over, it was kind of out of my hands. So after it was over, you just kind of sit back and wait.”

With this job in tow, Saulsberry can now look ahead to building the program his own way.

“When you don’t have that [interim] tag, you’re able to recruit, you’re able to do some of those things and then moving forward just being able to put a team team together, a team that the City of Cheyenne can be proud of.”
