Two Cheyenne Capitals teams win championships at the Colorado Cup
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - In late March, four Cheyenne Capitals youth ice hockey teams traveled south for the Colorado Cup State Championships.
The weekend was an outright success as all four teams performed well.
12U White was a runner up in their division and 12U was a semifinalist.
However, two teams, 12U Blue and 10U Blue, left the competition as champions.
“We’ve been down there a couple times and we’ve always ended up second,” said 12U Head Coach Darius Mandel. “So this was awesome to finally finish first so it’s good. The boys learned a lot from losing and then this was icing on the cake.”
The Colorado Cup championships can signify multiple things.
Banners will be raised at the Cheyenne Ice and Events Center to forever commemorate the victories.
“[I’m] just happy to bring home a banner,” said 12U Player Isaac Christensen.
Also, the winning Capitals teams have bragging rights, proving once and for all that hockey players from Wyoming can compete on the ice with teams from Colorado.
But most importantly, participating in the Colorado Cup, and winning it, will be an experience the kids will always remember and look back fondly on.
“[It was] super exciting and the last 30 seconds your heart just starts pumping and getting super excited and then to throw all your gear, like your gloves and your stick into the air, its a great experience,” said 12U Player Quincy Hendon.
