Windy Pattern Begins to Set In
April 7th, 2021
While winter may be over for the Cowboy State, those days filled with the annoying wind are not. The coming days will have more than their fair share of those Wyoming winds, however the good news is that they won’t be as strong as the winds typically are during the winter months. They will still be strong enough to be a nuisance however, and with some places expecting them for the next five to six days, they are going to get annoying in a hurry.
It begins today in the southeastern corner of the state, with Cheyenne likely to see the worst of it. The strongest winds are blowing this morning, with sustained speeds over 30 mph and gusts potentially over 50 mph from the northwest. The good news is for much of the afternoon the sustained speeds will remain under 30 mph with gusts over 40 mph. Laramie will see similar conditions with winds from the northwest as well. Outside of that however much of Wyoming will be enjoying relatively calm conditions in regards to wind today as temperatures begin to rebound from the cold front and the clouds break this afternoon.
Thursday brings even warmer conditions as highs climb back up into the 60s for much of the state under sunny skies. The wind will be quite widespread however, with the majority of the Cowboy State set to experience sustained speeds between 20 and 30 mph with gusts between 30 and 40 mph. Some gusts will be over 40 mph, however we shouldn’t see any gusts over 50. This is set to be more of a breezy day rather than a windy one, however the winds from the west will be persistent through the majority of the daylight hours. During the evening hours of Thursday, snow chances will ramp up for the northern and central parts of the state as another cold front is set to move through, dropping temperatures into Friday.
Friday is set to be almost identical to today: an opportunity for snow showers in the southeastern part of the state with the strongest winds expected in Southeast Wyoming early on before breezes of 20-30 mph set in along the I-80 corridor. The key difference between today and Friday however is high temperatures, with the 50s expected for this afternoon and the mid to upper 40s expected on Friday. Sky conditions will likely be the same as well: starting off cloudy with sunny skies making a return during the afternoon.
Saturday looks to be a carbon copy of tomorrow, however, with highs once again in the 60s for many spots around Wyoming and persistent westerly winds at 20-30 mph with gusts mainly between 30-40 mph. Sunny skies are expected for Saturday as well.
