WCDA explains current Casper housing market

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Officials from Wyoming Community Development Authority say the Casper housing market is up. Homes for sale get on the market and don’t stay there long.

Scott Hoversland, the executive director of WCDA, said the pandemic is keeping people in their homes. “People are working from home and they’re not moving around they can work from home so their jobs aren’t necessarily taking them to another place,” Hoversland said.

Houses are going fast from people moving to Casper from out of state even though prices are going up. “People from out of state looking at coming here are getting on Facetime with a friend that goes to the house for them. They’re putting in offers right there. This hasn’t happened before,” Hoversland said.

WCDA specializes in loans for first-time home buyers and so far this year they have helped fewer people take out a loan but they are loaning out more money.

“The first quarter of 2021 about $3 million more in mortgage purchases in the first 3 quarters than we had last year so I think it’s just a sign of the times,” Hoversland said.

The fewer houses on the market, Hoversland said people selling their home will be able to get the value of it. Summer, their busy season is coming up and they expect to see more people wanting to move.

“When kids are in school a lot of people don’t move it’s generally after that in the summer months and before school starts again,” Hoversland said.
