East Wrestling ready for Saturday’s 4A state tournament
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The East Thunderbirds are in the midst of gearing up for the 4A State Wrestling tournament.
The T-Birds are coming off a dominant regionals performance where six championship roads included Thunderbirds wrestling Thunderbirds,
East won that meet by 83 points, yet the team says the year was a work in progress for wyowrestling.com’s 4th ranked team in the state.
Now the team is reportedly performing better than they have all season.
“I think our team now would beat our team three weeks ago,” said East Senior Wrestler Bradley Whitright. “I think we’d kill our team three weeks ago. I think we are in better shape than everybody else .I think we’re ready.”
East has finished in third place at states for two consecutive seasons and the last time the team won a state championship was 2018.
Though he likes his team’s chances, East Head Wrestling Coach Thad Trujillo said that no matter what happens this weekend, he is still happy for his team.
“I’ve coached some of these kids since they were four years old and now one of them [son Landon Trujillo] lives in my house,” said Trujillo. “I feel somewhat of a step-dad to multiple others. So it’s a pretty special group. I don’t think its very often that you’ve got 10 seniors that stick it out all four years and are still here at the end. So I think that speaks a lot about their character and [having the] ability to persevere.”
The 4A State Tournament all goes down on Saturday.
The event will be held at the newly re-named Ford Wyoming Center in Casper.
