Prep Team of the Week: 2021 Laramie Boys Swimming and Diving
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Wyoming News Now sports department has decided to go about this week’s Prep Athlete of the Week honor in a different way.
Sometimes an accomplishment is so great that you cannot just honor one person. Therefore, the 2021 Laramie Plainsmen Boys Swimming and Diving team is the Wyoming News Now Prep Team of the Week.
On Friday, LHS won its fourth consecutive state championship.
The Plainsmen came first in just two events: 100 Fly (Mace Spiker-Miller) and 1 Mtr Dive (Dylan Bressler). Still, Laramie won the team state title by a comfortable 21 points.
The reason LHS was able to do that can be summed up with one word: depth.
“Depth is kind of a hallmark of the Laramie Swimming program, I would say,” Laramie Head Coach Tom Hudson said. “We’ve won many state titles without having the top swimmers. It’s rare to win a state title without winning even one relay, so our depth was was very good. We had 16 swimmers and divers qualify and 15 of them came back and scored points.”
The championship was the 24th in the boys program history and the 19th combined title (12 boys championships and seven girls championships) for Head Coach Tom Hudson.
Still, there was doubt heading into the season whether Laramie could four-peat this year.
The Plainsmen lost a senior class that included six-time individual state champion Max DeYoung to graduation.
But, LHS was a team full of fight this season.
“They were a consummate team,” Hudson said. “Every year you have some kids that may not be 100% committed or come in and come out. But these guys were so dedicated and committed and they didn’t know they were shooting for a state title at the beginning. They just liked being here and they just put their all into it.”
Crazy thing: no Laramie seniors qualified for states this year, so this exact group of Plainsmen will be back in 2022. The team will attempt the first five-peat in boys program history.
Congratulations to the 2021 State Champion Laramie Plainsmen, Wyoming News Now Prep Team of the Week.
